Faschnacht

Amy and Niko and I recently went to the San Antonio Leiderkranz's German Mardi Gras, also known as Faschnacht.

In the parking lot, Amy was accosted by a wolf.

He turned out to be a friendly wolf.

Amy also got a photo with the Queen and Prince Phillip.

A Highlander joined the clan.

And we all had a drink with Elvis!

Video of the day

Weird animals

Our llamas are not what you would call normal, even for llamas.

Case in point: We feed them pellets and alfalfa hay. The other day, Angela somehow got alfalfa on her back. Was she laying down and rolling in her food? I wouldn't be surprised.

Anyway, she and Pepper came up to the house later, and Pepper thought he needed a little snack, and the hay on Angela's back looked just like the ticket.

It was some kind of weird llama body sushi scene.

As you can see in this video (link), he was not too careful about getting only the hay, and kept biting and pulling her wool, which nearly got him spat upon. Llamas bite the plants/grass they are eating, then yank it to tear off a piece. Angela was not amused.

Groundhog Day Ride to Vanderpool via the OST

The weather here in Central Texas has been pretty darn nice lately, especially right about midday.

Joe, Lee, Tom, and I planned a breakfast run to the Old Spanish Trail to take advantage of Saturday's weather.

Lee showed off his new look, "goateed intellectual." The Duke, looking over his shoulder, appears skeptical.

Is Lee giving me the stink-eye?

You can't tell from this picture, but there about a dozen sweetener packets in that stack, seeing as Crystal had kept us well coffee'd up.

We stopped at the Shell station on the way out of Bandera so Joe could gas up. He finished filling the bike, got on the bike, then back off, then back on. Lee and Tom and I wondered what the hell he was doing.

He finally pushed the bike from the gas pump over to the side where we were waiting, "It won't start," he lamented.

We all unhooked our heated vests and mp3 players so we could gather 'round his bike and troubleshoot.

Headlights and turn signals worked fine, so it had battery. However, the headlight didn't dim when he pressed the starter button. In fact, nothing happened when he pressed the starter button.

Hmmm, sidestand or clutch safety interlock failure? (keeps the starter from engaging if the sidestand is down or the clutch is not pulled in.)

We fiddled with all the wiring on those two parts--no joy.

Next, Joe pulled off the seat so we could check the fuses. Damn, can't find the fuse box.

Just for grins, I held the starter button, and Joe held in the clutch while Tom poked his finger in random places in the wiring. Voila! She fired right up when Tom poked the positive battery terminal connection.

Looks like it was a loose connection.

Joe, Tom, and Tom's "magic finger."

We rode on to the picnic table overlook near Lost Maples. Damn, it's a pretty view:

There was a couple there on their Kawasaki Concours, so we struck up a conversation.

Turns out they were all the way from Illinois, down enjoying our "winter" weather. We asked where they'd ridden, and where they were planning to ride. Joe recommended some good roads, as well as lunch at the OST. (I saw them there on my way home.)

Here they are, Wayne and Ginny Sweet.

Departing the picnic table.

On my way home, via Utopia.

You know, I have no business complaining about how cluttered our 1800 square foot house is.

Hey! There's something by the road. Is it a groundhog?

Nope, unless they've taken to wearing armor.

The animals were glad to have me back.

Camouflage

I think that when the US Military gets camouflage this good, then that'll be the end of any opposition. From anyone. Anywhere.

This is just amazing/creepy.

Imagine walking past a wall or a bush that is actually hiding a person wearing this type of camouflage. I think I'll start developing my sense of smell!

More back in the day ...

I was perusing the dusty archives on my backup disk, and came across these jewels from a decade ago:

At the gateway to the park. Some people just can't be trusted to not climb on things.

A shot using the camera timer. Notice the poor attempt to mock a fellow biker.

After a strenuous hike from the Basin down to the "Window." We are mere inches from plunging a thousand feet to the desert floor.

Back in the days before 9/11/01, when you could take a boat across the Rio Grande, and then walk or ride a burro into Boquillas. The town seems to have all but disappeared these days. :-(

Sitting on the porch in Boquillas, basking in the relaxed feeling.

Tom's revenge for Lee's earlier mocking. Photo taken at the Pecos bridge overlook.

In Your Eyes

Amy just pointed me to this video this morning. It's Peter Gabriel performing "In Your Eyes" in concert.

This song has been one of my favorites for many years.

It also figures prominently in the movie "Say Anything," also a favorite of mine for over two decades.

Enjoy:

Construction sky

Amy and I went to Ron and Linda's the other day.

On the way into town, the sun was setting just as we passed loop 1604.

I took several pictures, this was the only one that came out.

It wasn't until I looked at it again today that I noticed that there's either a ufo, or comet Holmes in the upper left...

The Band Meme

I usually just read these meme's on other folks' blogs, but rarely participate. This one, however, made both Amy and me laugh.

From "Sharp as a Marble:"

The Band Meme

Here’s how it goes. You are about to have your own band’s CD cover. Follow these directions to the letter. It’s fun and requires no thought at all. Go to……
1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first article title on the page is the name of your band.
2. http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.
3. http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
4. Use your graphics program of choice to throw them together, and post the result in your own journal because it’s more amusing that way.

Here's mine:

Retirement ride

No, not me, not yet at least. My good friend Tom celebrated his entry into the leisure class today.

Lee and I took him on a nice circuitous ride to Wimberley for breakfast.

It was a bit brisk when I departed the house at 0820. The sun had risen.

The thermometer was not following the sun’s example.

Three miles later it was brisker still.

Lee and I met Tom at his house at 0900. Roadtrip the cat wouldn’t let Lee out his sight.

We took the back roads from Tom’s house, and hadn’t been rolling for more than ten minutes before this herd of deer tried to kill me.

Ahhh, the back roads of the Hill Country, nothing better.

Our leisurely ride to Wimberley turned out to be a little too leisurely to keep our breakfast plans. We missed breakfast by minutes, but lunch turned out to be a fine alternative… Veggie burger ala Cypress Creek CafĂ©.

We headed out to Luckenbach after lunch, and ran into a fellow ADV-er on his stealth GS.

Tom and Lee are both showing their age—they were looking longingly at this Gold Wing.

Anyway, it is nice to see someone now have all the time they want for riding.

The best Christmas Present ever!

Having these two home (the two on the left).

I love the progression of the colors over a fifteen minute span...

I have a very generous family...

And the person who drew my name for a Christmas present gave me a Nintendo Wii....

I was very happy, until I read this story:

Nintendo's Wii a surprise hit with seniors (link)

Is there a deeper meaning to this gift?

:-D

Heroism is alive and well

In the worst of circumstances, some people put their lives on the line to defend others.

To do it after three days of fasting, and pitting a handgun against a murderer with long guns and body armor, is truly incredible.

This woman is an American hero for her actions that day.

Hmmmmmmm

A defining moment in history ....
